Roland's track record includes two years with a logistics consultancy, where he developed environmentally friendly solutions for freight transportation. Later, he worked for six years as a reinsurance underwriter in the French property market (Swiss Re, Paris office). Developing new products, dealing with risks from fire and natural disasters to nuclear terrorism and tailoring covers to individual clients’ profiles were part of his core activities. Throughout his time with Swiss Re, he was happy to share his experience with colleagues in regular trainings and workshops.
In 2006, Roland started his own consultancy business, which is based in Zurich, Switzerland. He worked as a reinsurance expert for Swiss Re in France, and since 2008 he is on regular assignments for the MicroInsurance Centre. His recent microinsurance work has taken him to Armenia, Bangladesh, Bosnia, Ghana, Jordan, Kenya, Philippines, Vietnam and the West Bank. In 2008 he co-founded the Fair Trade Insurance Initiative, which promotes innovative insurance solutions for smallholders in developing countries. As an active member of the MicroInsurance Network he co-steers the working group on agricultural microinsurance. Recent publications include a manual for efficient process design in microinsurance, a contribution to the upcoming 2nd edition of the Microinsurance Compendium and a discussion paper on microinsurance and climate change.
Clémence is an independent consultant currently working with several organizations, including the MicroInsurance Centre and Denis Garand and Associates. An actuary by training, she has spent ten years working in the field of general insurance, including five years on microinsurance. She has substantial on-site product development experience as well, and has worked with micro-finance institutions (MFIs), insurers, rural banks, and other non-profit organizations, in Peru, Bolivia, Mali, Egypt, Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Clémence holds a Master’s degree in Financial and Actuarial Sciences from the Financial and Insurance Sciences Institute in Lyon, France. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in France, and served as an ILO Technical Assistance Fellow for the Microinsurance Innovation Facility in India in 2009-2010.
Since 2000, Barbara has been working in economic development programs with a strong focus in Latin America. She was lead analyst and trainer on a one year activity for Pro Mujer International that aimed to strengthen and centralize its current client information and feedback loop. She also performed extensive analysis of the market and client needs in Nicaragua, where she worked closely with Banex, a former MSME financial institution. She has designed microinsurance programs for a number of institutions, networks and government agencies including INISER (Nicaragua's largest insurer) and most recently FOSIS (A Chilean government social protection program). In 2010, she co-authored a study for the IDB/FOMIN on the opportunities and constraints for offering microinsurance to immigrants in the United States.
Rick has 30 years of experience managing and consulting with insurance companies, health plans and self-funded programs. In his consulting practice Rick works with several dozen insurance companies across the US to re-engineer insurance and ASO product lines, develop new market segments, increase premiums/membership, and build efficient, financially and operationally sound operations.
On the international front, Rick has worked with emerging microinsurance programs for over ten years under contracts with USAID, World Bank/CGAP, BMGF and others in India, Philippines, the Caribbean and elsewhere. For many years, he was Executive Vice President with Amalgamated Life Insurance Company, a New York based AM Best "A" rated carrier focused on trade union business.
Emily is a Research Associate with EA Consultants and the MicroInsurance Centre. She has worked on both the client value and the business case components of the MILK project. Emily has also performed research on various topics surrounding the development and sale of microinsurance products, and worked on two projects analyzing remittance-linked microinsurance products, one a global mapping of remittance-linked microinsurance products, and the other analyzing possible remittance-linked microinsurance products that could serve the needs of Mexican immigrants in the US. Prior to joining EA Consultants, she worked for three years as a corporate lawyer for two large multinational firms, where her practice focused on equity and debt financing, mergers and acquisitions, and investment management.
Since 2001 Denis has been an independent consultant, focusing on the Canadian group insurance industry and international microinsurance programs. Canadian assignments have included strategic reviews, capital management, training, product development, pricing, mergers, insurance company start up and the development of the first Canadian disability incidence study.
Internationally Denis has worked on all facets of microinsurance focusing on micro health insurance. Assignment have been conducted for ADB, AKAM, BearingPoint, CCA, CGAP, FFH, MIME, ILO, ILO-STEP, Sanasa, GTZ, The World Bank, ICMIF and many others . He has experience in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Philippines, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Mali, Senegal, Kenya, Benin, Rwanda, Egypt, Uganda, Tanzania, Haiti, South Africa, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Peru, Fiji and Barbados on all aspects of micro insurance. Denis is Chair of the Microinsurance Network Performance Indicator working group, a member of the Microinsurance Network Health subgroup, a member of the ILO innovation facility steering committee and is co-author on several topics in microinsurance.
John originally worked as an actuarial analyst for a cooperative life insurer in Canada where he specialized in developing actuarial evaluation models, group insurance rating manuals and quotation software, and providing actuarial support to group insurance underwriters. From 1998 to 2004 John managed a microinsurance and cooperative development project in Philippines which focused on building insurance capacity, developing competitive products, and improving distribution in the cooperative insurance and microinsurance sectors. He joined Denis Garand and Associates (DGA) in 2005. His extensive experience includes product development, project development and evaluation, business planning, pricing, experience analysis, training, administration systems and actuarial software development, and many other types of microinsurance projects.
Internationally, John has worked on assignments for ADB, BearingPoint, Deloitte, USAID, CCA, CGAP, ILO, GTZ, ICMIF, and others with experience in India, Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal, China, Ghana, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Fiji, and other countries. As a consultant in microinsurance development he worked on the following: feasibility studies/business planning, market demand surveys, product design, pricing, financial and actuarial analysis, developing administration systems, developing reinsurance and actuarial software, developing microinsurance training materials, project management, and in many areas. John is member of the Microinsurance Network performance indicator working group and is co-author of several published articles and booklets on microinsurance topics.
Jonathan will be an assistant professor of consumer science at Purdue University starting in August 2013, with a focus on consumer behavior. He completed his dissertation on financial access in developing countries. He has been collaborating with the Financial Access Initiative since 2007 and has extensive experience in economic analysis of low-income consumers and financial behavior. Prior to his work at FAI, he was a research assistant and project manager at Innovations for Poverty Action, where he managed randomized field experiments in Peru, South Africa and the Philippines. He holds a PhD in Public Administration from New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service.
Martina has been working in financial systems development since 1992 as a short-and long-term expert in over 20 countries and is specialised in the support to regulation, supervision and policy issues. She is - on behalf of the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) – a member of the Microinsurance Network in its Working Group Regulation, Supervision and Policy Issues. Since 2002, she has been working as independent consultant in the area of financial systems development in Africa, Latin America and Asia, based in Germany. As a team leader for the GTZ microfinance project in Bolivia, from 1998 to 2002, she was particularly engaged in the development of financial innovations, the expansion of financial services and their policy issues including regulation and supervision. Prior to her engagement with GTZ, Mrs. Wiedmaier-Pfister was working in German cooperative banks for ten years.
Ms. Wiedmaier-Pfister advises governments, development agencies, microfinance institutions and international and national support institutions as well as central banks and supervisory authorities. Her assignments are both, technical and strategic, always with the aim to make financial systems more inclusive through improving outreach and sustainability of microfinance and microinsurance. She is the lead author on numerous publications in the field of access to finance including policy and regulatory issues of microinsurance and holds a master’s degree in business administration.
Eamon has over 20 years of actuarial experiencein the private insurance sector in Ireland and Australia, primarily as a general insurance consultant. He has acted as a consultant on financial services, accident compensation schemes, general insurance and banking. His most recent work has been in the development sector, and he has acted as lead project manager and consultant to insurance initiatives in Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the MENA region. He is based out of London, United Kingdom.
Felipe recently joined the Microinsurance Centre as an insurance specialist focused on Mass Market programs and “Developing partnerships to insure the world’s poor”. Formerly, Botero was Vice President of Global Technology and Operations at MetLife, where he spent more than 20 years, in a variety of roles.
At MetLife Botero applied his insurance industry, technology and program management skills in the implementation of multiple global regulatory and compliance programs, as well as the integration of several multi-national M&A transactions.
Over the past decade Botero has worked with various international organizations focused on the development of appropriate insurance products and services for low-income people around the globe. He has participated in research studies, assessments and business development initiatives.
Botero holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from Queens College, a Master’s of Science degree in Systems Engineering from New York Polytechnic University and an MBA in Finance from New York University. Botero served four years in the US Army. He is a Fellow of LOMA and the Aspen Institute.
